Another disappointing night for Burnley's World Cup players

27 March 2013 10:33
None of the Burnley players on World Cup duty last night will be returning with a win as Northern Ireland, Jamaica and Wales all fell to defeat in last night's qualifiers. Fourth cap for Danny Lafferty

Danny Lafferty was again in a Northern Ireland side which saw the return of Martin Paterson. With the home game against Russia called off, leaving former Claret Kyle Lafferty suspended for this game, a win was vital at Windsor Park against Belfast, but they suffered a 2-0 defeat with Israel scoring their goals in the last twelve minutes.

Lafferty won his fourth cap, playing the full ninety minutes while Paterson was replaced by David Healy, now at Bury, with just six minutes remaining.

At the same time, Wales were losing 2-1 at home to Croatia at Swansea's Liberty Stadium in a game which, just as was the case in their win against Scotland on Friday, Sam Vokes was an unused substitute. Like Northern Ireland they conceded two late goals and this after Gareth Bale had given them a 21st minute lead from the penalty spot.

Some hours later, Dane Richards won his 42nd cap for Jamaica, and his first since becoming a Burnley player. It wasn't a good night for Jamaica either who fell to a 2-0 defeat in Costa Rica.

Richards came on as a substitute for the last ten minutes with the score at 1-0, replacing Reading's Garath McCleary, but the home side doubled their advantage within a minute.

One former Claret, Gabor Kiraly, won his 89th cap for Hungary as they drew their qualifier 1-1 in Turkey. Hungary are currently second in Group D, but a massive seven points behind Holland who are yet to drop a point.

Rhys Williams, meanwhile, was an unused substitute for Australia in their Asian Group qualifier at home against Oman. They drew the game 2-2 in Sydney with Tim Cahill, previously of Millwall and Everton, and Aston Villa's Brett Holman scoring the goals.

David Edgar and Alex Kačaniklić were both involved in friendlies. Edgar played the full game for Canada against Belarus which, like the previous game against Japan was played in Qatar. They lost the game 2-1 but Kačaniklić played in a second successive 0-0 draw for Sweden, this time in a friendly in Slovakia where he played for just over an hour.

Finally, there was a 12th cap for Peruvian goalkeeper. He was an unused substitute in their 1-0 World Cup qualifier win against Chile last Friday but yesterday played the full ninety minutes in a friendly in Lima against Trinidad & Tobago, a game Peru won 3-0.

The INTERNATIONALS feature on Clarets Mad has been updated with all those who played yesterday with Richards now moved into the first section.
