Alexander targets two more years

The Scotland international, who has not travelled with George Burley's squad for this week's friendly in Japan, celebrates his 38th birthday on Saturday and is the oldest outfield player in the Premier League. But, having waited 20 years for his chance among the elite of English football, he is not prepared to give it up lightly. "Playing in the Premier League is something I have looked forward to all my career," said Alexander. "I have got this chance and I really want to take it and give it everything I have got. "It's a great fillip for me to have towards the end of my career - but hopefully not the end. "I am loving it and hopefully I can play at this level for a couple more years yet." The former Scunthorpe, Luton and Preston defender - converted to a holding midfielder by Clarets manager Owen Coyle - was an ever-present in the club's promotion from the Championship last season. He has started every Premier League match but, despite his extensive experience, admits he is still learning how to cope with the top flight. "It's a slightly different game to the Championship, with the pace of the players and the finishing is of a higher standard," Alexander told Clarets Player. "But I think you get a bit more time on the ball so, if you can use the ball and pass it, it's a positive for you. "I would like to think I can pass the ball reasonably well so I have adapted to that side. "But, like everyone else, I am finding my feet and you look forward to the challenge every week. "With the players you put yourself up against, it's like a personal battle and a test every week." Burnley's next test is against arch-rivals Blackburn on October 18 and captain Steven Caldwell is targeting a first Premier League away win. The eagerly-anticipated derby between the Lancashire neighbours a week on Sunday will be their first league meeting for nearly nine years and the first in the top flight since 1965. Despite their impressive home form, which has brought four victories from four matches, the Clarets have yet to win a point away from Turf Moor. "It's a huge game, and we'll be going out there to play in the same way as we always do and hopefully win the game," said Caldwell, who made his Premier League debut for Burnley in last weekend's 2-1 victory over Birmingham having missed the first seven matches with a groin injury. "I think it is the biggest game of the season so far." Blackburn 10/11, Draw 23/10, Burnley 16/5
