A home win at last for Scunthorpe

17 February 2011 09:53
Cardiff and Swansea are the only Championship teams to have won more away games than Scunthorpe, but their 1-0 home win against Nottingham Forest last night was their first Glanford Park victory since they beat Crystal Palace in August. Scunthorpe were nicely in mid-table when they won at Hull in November, but four points in thirteen games, with all four points coming against Burnley, has seen them slip into serious trouble at the bottom.Last night's win over Forest, courtesy of a Chris Dagnall goal, was a massive surprise given that they are the form team and hadn't lost since November. The result meant Forest missed a chance to go second whilst Scunthorpe still remain next to bottom and weren't helped by the other two teams in the relegation zone, Sheffield United and Preston, both picking up points.Sheffield United were thankful for a late penalty to get a home draw against Reading but Preston looked to be on the yellow brick road to victory at Watford when they led 2-0, eventually having to settle for a point. We made it three draws on Tuesday with our point at Cardiff whilst the other game saw born again Ipswich hit Doncaster for six at the Keepmoat including a Connor Wickham hat trick. It's surprising what you can do once Roy Keane's out of the door and Ipswich are certainly having a honeymoon period on a par with ours right now.As for Doncaster, manager Sean O'Driscoll said on television that he couldn't see a light at the end of the tunnel. The three points they got against us are the only points they've won in the last seven games and the manager fears they could get dragged into that battle at the bottom. We've almost a full fixture list this weekend with just the Burnley v Coventry game called off because of our involvement in the FA Cup. Reading, the other Championship club still involved in the cup, don't play their tie at either Everton or Chelsea until the beginning of March so can play their league game. The midweek results, stats, the league's leading scorers, each club's disciplinary record and the weekend fixtures are all below.
