A good day for the top half

17 January 2011 09:33
Saturday was very much a day when the better teams in the division had the better day. Not one of the teams that started the day in the top half of the Championship were beaten. You had to go down to Derby County, in 13th place on Saturday morning, to find the first loser so there was little change in the table at either end.Burnley's draw with leaders QPR reduced their lead at the top of the table to three points, but there is an almighty scramble developing just below them. Swansea currently occupy the second automatic promotion place but they are just two points ahead of Cardiff, Norwich and Leeds with the first two of those three having a game in hand.Watford are the remaining team in the play off positions, just a further two points behind and with one or two games in hand on all those above them. What looked, just a few weeks ago, a runaway promotion for QPR and Cardiff is now looking anything but with three other clubs within one win of reaching the top six. There is no real sign of change down at the bottom with the same three clubs - Crystal Palace, Scunthorpe and Preston - in the relegation places. Only Preston, courtesy of a late equaliser, won a point but they remain seven points away from Sheffield United and safety. We're now six points behind those play off positions and unless we can find some consistency in the coming weeks, made even more difficult with the next three league games away from home, we could be destined for a mid-table finish to the season. The weekend results, stats, leading goalscorers, each club's disciplinary record and the next fixtures are all shown below. The Weekend ResultsSaturday 15th JanuaryBristol City 0 Middlesbrough 4Millwall 2 Ipswich 1Burnley 0 QPR 0Norwich 1 Cardiff 1Coventry 0 Sheffield United 0Nottingham Forest 2 Portsmouth 1Doncaster 0 Reading 3Preston 1 Leicester 1Hull 2 Barnsley 0Swansea 3 Crystal Palace 0Leeds 4 Scunthorpe 0Watford 3 Derby 0The Weekend StatsBiggest winLeeds 4-0 v Scunthorpe (home)Middlesbrough 4-0 v Bristol City (away)Total goals scored29 (18 home - 11 away)Player scoring most goals2Leroy Lita (Middlesbrough)Scott Sinclair (Swansea)Highest Attendance25,446 - Leeds v ScunthorpeLowest Attendance9,496 - Doncaster v ReadingTotal Yellow Cards33Total Red Cards3Most cards in a gameBurnley v QPR (7Y) - Mike JonesThe leading scorers (league only)15Danny Graham (Watford) - includes 1 penalty13Jay Bothroyd (Cardiff)Kris Commons (Derby) - includes 2 penalties12Luciano Becchio (Leeds)Adel Taarabt (QPR) - includes 5 penalties11Shane Long (Reading) - includes 4 penalties10Grant Holt (Norwich)Chris Iwelumo (Burnley)Lewis McGugan (Nottingham Forest) - includes 2 penaltiesSteve Morison (Millwall) - includes 1 penaltyBilly Sharp (Doncaster) - includes 4 penaltiesScott Sinclair (Swansea) - includes 2 penalties9Max Gradel (Leeds) - includes 1 penaltyAndy King (Leicester)Jamie Mackie (QPR)Marvin Sordell (Watford) 8Adam Hammill (Barnsley)James Hayter (Doncaster)Wes Hoolahan (Norwich) - includes 4 penaltiesJon Parkin (Cardiff) - includes 7 goals for PrestonBrett Pitman (Bristol City) - includes 3 penaltiesHat Tricks (league only)11th Sep3 - Chris Iwelumo - BURNLEY v Preston14th Sep3 - James Coppinger - DONCASTER v Norwich14th Sep3 - James Vaughan - CRYSTAL PALACE v Portsmouth28th Sep3 - Jon Parkin - Leeds v PRESTON30th Oct3 - Jonny Howson - Scunthorpe v LEEDS13th Nov3 - Luciano Becchio - LEEDS v Bristol City27th Nov3 - Grant Holt - NORWICH v Leeds28th Dec3 - Wes Hoolahan - NORWICH v Sheffield United1st Jan3 - Jason Puncheon - MILLWALL v Crystal PalaceDisciplinary Record (all domestic games)ClubYRClubYRBarnsley392Middlesbrough381Bristol City412Millwall413Burnley484Norwich433Cardiff341Nottingham Forest350Coventry443Portsmouth505Crystal Palace425Preston565Derby461QPR444Doncaster313Reading423Hull502Scunthorpe271Ipswich424Sheffield United395Leeds542Swansea482Leicester312Watford260The Next FixturesSaturday 22nd JanuaryBarsnley v SwanseaMiddlesbrough v PrestonCardiff v WatfordPortsmouth v LeedsCrystal Palace v Bristol CityReading v Hull CityDerby v Nottingham Forest (13:00)Scunthorpe v Burnley (17:20)Ipswich v DoncasterSheffield United v NorwichLeicester v Millwall.Sunday 23rd JanuaryQPR v Coventry (13:15).
