Bristol Rovers are desperate to try and agree a new contract with leading scorer Rickie Lambert as soon as possible.
The 26-year-old netted 19 goals for the Pirates in the season just ended and his current deal has only another 12 months to run.
Director of football Lennie Lawrence told the Evening Post: "We do have a few players that are out of contract next summer. We are just concentrating on getting Rickie Lambert sorted out first.
"We will be attempting to get that done in the next two or three weeks.
"We are trying to extend for two years on top of his current deal, anything longer is not practical and anything shorter is a waste of time."
Lambert joined Rovers for £200,000 in the summer of 2006 from Rochdale and has scored 29 goals in 106 appearances for the Pirates.
