Rovers ready for Lambert talk
02 Dec 2008 - 13:03:44
Bristol Rovers' director of football Lennie Lawrence expects Rickie Lambert to be the subject of feverish transfer speculation in the next few weeks.
The 26-year-old has scored 17 goals in 18 League One matches so far this term but, although he still has 30 months left on his current contract, has been tipped to leave the Pirates in the January transfer window.
"When you're the leading scorer in the league and as good a player as Rickie is, there's bound to be speculation - you'd be surprised if there wasn't," Lawrence told the Evening Post.
"He's going to have to learn to live with it because I don't think it's going to go away.
"When you're a footballer - especially a successful one - it's part and parcel of the game and you have to cope with it, both as a player and a club, without the situation deteriorating.
"That's why we moved heaven and earth to get him to sign a new contract, which at the moment looks a remarkably good bit of business.
"We can only deal with concrete offers as, when and if they come in - and nothing like that will happen until January 1."
Bolton Wanderers are the latest club to be linked with the former Stockport County and Rochdale hot-shot.
