Cotterill handed jail term

Thursday Jan 11 2007 14:05

Barrow defender James Cotterill has been sentenced to four months in jail for his assault on Bristol Rovers striker Sean Rigg during the FA Cup first round meeting between the two sides earlier this season.

Rigg sustained a broken jaw in the incident, being left needing metal plates to keep the bone intact.

Passing sentence, Judge Robert Brown told Preston Crown Court: "The courts have for a long time now made it absolutely clear that this sort of violence on the field of play cannot and will not be tolerated.

"And for this kind of off-the-ball incident a custodial sentence is inevitable."

Rigg has not played since the incident on November 11 last year.
