Bristol City boss Gary Johnson accepted that his side's automatic promotion hopes had all but disappeared with a 2-1 defeat at rivals Stoke City.
The loss left the Robins four points adrift of the Potters with just two games to go and Johnson was far from happy with the performance at the Britannia Stadium.
He told the Evening Post: "It's a shame, because we've been in a good position for 43 games and then blown it in the first half of this game. We didn't show what we needed to show and the lads know that.
"The players have got themselves into this position and they have to handle it. They let themselves down and they know how I feel.
"Thank goodness we did improve and give it a go after the break, because it would have been embarrassing had we come out and produced another performance like we did in the first half.
"If this result costs us automatic promotion, it will be because of that first-half performance."
