Collins keeps Shrews on track

Top scorer James Collins fired a late winner as Shrewsbury edged out Bristol Rovers 1-0 to stay in the hunt for automatic promotion.

A tight game of few chances looked destined to end goalless until Republic of Ireland Under-21 international Collins rifled home his 10th goal of the season five minutes from time.

Rovers failed to clear a corner and Collins reacted instinctively to rocket a shot on the turn to the top corner of the net for his tenth goal of the season.

Shrewsbury remain unbeaten at the Greenhous Meadow this season and have collected 36 points from a possible 42 on home soil.

A sterile first half featured few chances at either end, with neither keeper seriously extended.

Shrewsbury winger Mark Wright, facing his former club, flashed a 25 yard shot just wide while a long range piledriver from Rovers midfielder Craig Stanley went straight at keeper Chris Neal.

The second half was a little more open with Collins seeing a header tipped over by keeper Michael Poke while Rovers' Elliot Richards was just off target from the edge of the box.

It was a first defeat for Rovers since Mark McGhee took over.
