Newport claim shock win at ragged Bristol Rovers

Bristol Rovers paid the price for some calamitous defending as they slipped to a shock 4-1 Sky Bet League Two defeat to struggling Newport at the Memorial Stadium.

The visitors took an 11th-minute lead when Rovers defender Tom Parkes misjudged a long ball into the box from Medy Elito and glanced his header past Lee Nicholls for an own goal.

Two minutes later the hosts were level as Billy Bodin let fly with a right-footed volley from the right corner of the penalty area and found the top left corner of the net with a sweet strike.

Newport went back in front in the 52nd minute when goalkeeper Nicholls went to gather a deflected cross from Lenell John-Lewis and dropped the ball at the feet of Zak Ansah, who was left with a tap-in.

Five minutes later Ansah got the better of Parkes 20 yards out and unleashed an unstoppable left-footed shot into the roof of the net.

Tommy O'Sullivan put the seal on an emphatic Newport win with a fierce right-footed drive from the edge of the box 15 minutes from time.
