Chris Whelpdale earns Stevenage a first away win of the season

Chris Whelpdale blasted a 60th-minute winner to earn Stevenage their first away League Two success of the season with a 2-1 victory at Bristol Rovers.

The midfielder netted with a fierce right-footed drive from 20 yards and Teddy Sheringham's team went on to defend their advantage with great tenacity.

Stevenage took a fourth-minute lead when Stuart Sinclair's poor clearance was pounced on by Steven Schumacher, who sent a low right-footed shot past goalkeeper Lee Nicholls from just inside the box.

Rovers were back on terms after 33 minutes. Paris Cowan-Hall, making his debut on loan from Millwall, picked out Matt Taylor with a precise chip and the striker confidently fired past Chris Day from close range with Stevenage appealing for offside.

Rovers midfielder Billy Bodin had a shot beaten away by Day in a first half of few chances for either side.

It was a similar story after the break with Jermaine Easter shooting narrowly wide for the hosts and Whelpdale forcing a diving save from Nicholls before he snatched the winner.
