Martinez hails match-winner Monk

Saturday's Championship victory moved the Swans to within one point of sixth-placed Burnley, who host Sheffield United on Monday. Swansea pressed the visitors back from the opening whistle and Nathan Dyer gave the defence a hard time down the left flank at the Liberty Stadium. But it was an attack on the right that led to the game's only goal in the 25th minute. The move resulted in a corner and Andrea Orlandi's kick was headed in by Monk at the near post. Martinez said: "It is becoming a habit for our defenders to score goals and Garry was probably feeling left out. "But he has a habit of scoring in important games and it was a great delivery and worthy of winning any match. "Achieving the victory was our first aim but reaching 68 points is an incredible achievement for this club and it allows us to carry on with our dream of promotion." The Swans did most of the attacking in the opening period but strangely seemed to lack belief in front of goal. The Robins relied on breakaways but rarely threatened the home goal. It was only in the second half when Gavin Williams came on that Bristol suddenly started to open up but they came against a stout defence in which Monk and Ashley Williams were outstanding. Darren Pratley sent a glancing header just wide three minutes after taking the field and then a mistake by Adriano Basso on the hour when his clearance went straight to Jason Scotland should have led to a second goal but the striker sent his shot wide. A late surge by the Robins saw a Dele Adebola header drop just wide of the far post but the Swans held out for a deserved victory. "It wasn't a fair result and I am very disappointed as I felt they won the game through a defensive mistake," said Robins manager Gary Johnson. "We had opportunities to score but were not clinical enough in the final third. "Swansea must believe that they can get into the play-offs but it was a very even game and they scored the vital goal."
