Lansdown asks for backing

Bristol City chairman Steve Lansdown is urging fans to flock to the city`s council house to show their support for Sainsbury`s plans to relocate to Ashton Gate. The Robins are keen to move into a new state-of-the-art stadium which would find a quarter of its funding as a result of the supermarket chain moving its Winterstoke Road store onto the site of City`s current ground. The decision will be made by Bristol City Council and Lansdown will address councillors to back the plans, and he wants to see Robins supporters turn up to show their solidarity behind the move - just a day after it was announced a petition in support of the new stadium has now attracted 30,000 signatures. Lansdown told the club`s official website: "This is a huge fixture for the football club and I hope our fantastic supporters will attend en masse. "The Sainsbury`s plans are crucial to the new stadium which, in turn, is crucial to the future of the club. I hope to see the council chamber packed out and the College Green full with our supporters. "While we must always stay polite and respectful to those who oppose the scheme, it is important we win over a vocal minority and take this club and this city forward. I hope everyone who can make it down there turns up to back us."
