Gary O'Neil in race to be fit for Bristol City's opener

Bristol City new boy Gary O'Neil is in a race against time to make his debut against Wigan.

Experienced midfielder O'Neil joined from Norwich on a free transfer this summer, but a knee injury sustained in training saw him miss the Robins' final pre-season friendly against Portsmouth last weekend.

Joe Bryan could be switched into midfield to cover O'Neil's absence, with Scott Golbourne deputising at left-back.

Goalkeeper Richard O'Donnell is set to feature against the club he left in January, while Jonathan Kodjia will lead the City attack despite being linked with a move away this summer after scoring 20 goals last season.

Wigan manager Gary Caldwell is hoping a number of knocks and niggles will clear up.

New signing Nick Powell sat out last Friday's final pre-season friendly with a tight groin as a precaution, as did full-back Stephen Warnock (calf).

Emyr Huws, who has missed the last three warm-up matches after rolling his ankle in training, is doubtful but the knock striker Will Grigg took to his ankle against Fleetwood was only minor.

Donervon Daniels (knee) is also a doubt so last season's academy player of the year, Luke Burke, may make his debut at right wing-back.
