Super-sub Elliott lifts Robins

Bristol City substitute Marvin Elliott scored twice in the space of three minutes to turn the game on its head and clinch his side a priceless 2-1 win over Carlisle.

Carlisle went in front after 36 minutes when Adam El-Abd, who had struggled from the start, brought down Charni Ekangamene with a crude foul and Brad Potts drilled a low free-kick past the wall and debutant goalkeeper Simon Moore from 25 yards.

But midfielder Elliott, introduced as one of two half-time substitutes by manager Steve Cotterill, headed City level from Sam Baldock's 68th-minute cross.

And in the 70th minute Jay Emmanuel-Thomas's corner from the right was allowed to reach Elliott, who volleyed past Carlisle goalkeeper Greg Fleming from eight yards.

City were pedestrian and gave the ball away incessantly in the opening 45 minutes and were lucky after 12 minutes when Michael Drennan intercepted a poor pass from Derrick Williams and lashed a 20-yard shot against the crossbar.

But Cotterill's switch from 3-5-2 to a 4-4-2 formation and the impact made by Elliott and fellow replacements Wes Burns and Tyrone Barnett made all the difference.
