    Slade: Worst night of career

    19 Aug 2009 - 10:47:14

Despondent Brighton & Hove Albion manager Russell Slade was left to pick up the pieces after his team's disastrous 7-1 pounding at fancied League One outfit Huddersfield Town on Tuesday evening.

Lee Clark's men opened the scoring through Antony Kay before the Seagulls levelled through a crisp strike from Liam Dickinson.

The Terriers regained the lead a minute later when Peter Clarke scored his first goal for the club and things soon got worse for the visitors.

Goalkeeper Michels Kuipers was shown a straight red card for upending Lee Novak in the box and Novak dispatched the resulting spot kick past substitute stopper Graeme Smith.

He couldn't stop the goals flying in although he did save a later penalty from Jordan Rhodes.

Second-half goals from Gary Roberts, Danny Drinkwater and a late brace from Thoe Robinson confirmed the Yorkshire club's superiority.

And a dejected Slade was quick to apologise for the horror evening.

"It's an absolutely horrendous night for me as a manager, for the team, for the club. I certainly did not see it coming," he said.

"I can only apologise. It is by far the worst night I have ever had in football for sure.

"Losing your goalkeeper and going 3-1 down meant a tough night was going to get tougher and in the second half they showed what a class side they are."
