McNulty has kidney removed
24 Mar 2009 - 11:03:48
Brighton defender Jim McNulty has had to have a kidney removed after suffering a horrendous injury in last month's game against Crewe Alexandra.
The 24-year-old full-back had to be taken to hospital after suffering the injury during the second half of the 4-0 defeat but, despite attempts to save his right kidney, it has had to be taken out.
McNulty is not expected to be fit enough to feature in pre-season training, with Seagulls physio Malcolm Stuart telling the club's official website: "The idea was to save the kidney if we could but the damage was too great.
"It was a long and painful operation but he's making a steady recovery and we see no reason why he shouldn't return to full fitness.
"Ten per cent of the population walk around with only one kidney so it's not going to be a problem career-wise, but it's obviously a big blow to Jim."
