Ailing Seagulls turn to Poyet

Brighton & Hove Albion have confirmed former Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Gus Poyet as their new manager.

The club were linked with Dennis Wise and Steve Coppell but the Uruguayan has now put pen-to-paper on a deal keeping him at the struggling League One club until the end of next season.

He will be assisted by Mauricio Taricco, who he played alongside at Spurs.

Russell Slade was sacked as manager at the start of the month following a poor start to the campaign and the club now sit just one place above the relegation zone.

Chairman Tony Bloom said of the appointment: "Gus is one of the best up and coming young coaches in this country and we're delighted to give him his first opportunity in management.

"His credentials are exceptional and all of the reports we've had on his coaching ability are outstanding.

"I'm certain he'll be a big success with the Albion, and I'd like to take this opportunity to welcome both Gus and Mauricio to the club."
