Stadium boost for Seagulls

Brighton & Hove Albion have moved a step closer to building a new stadium at Falmer after learning two of their remaining opponents will not challenge the recent decision to grant the club planning permission.

Falmer Parish Council and the South Downs Society have joined Lewes District Council in revealing they will not challenge the government's decision last month to rubber-stamp plans for a new 22,500-seater arena.

The Seagulls have been without a permanent home since their Goldstone Ground was sold ten years ago.

"It is fantastic news that our three main opponents have accepted Hazel Blears' decision," chief executive Martin Perry told the club's official website.

"Obviously we still have to wait for the six-week deadline to pass - as the decision can still be challenged - but we are confident there are no grounds for an appeal.

"It looks like we will be able to start moving the project forward very soon, start work on securing the financing, completing the legal agreements, and ultimately beginning work on the site towards the end of next year."
