Virgo handed Seagulls armband
The Brighton-born defender will lead the side out for Saturday's season-opener against Walsall, while Nicky Forster will retain the club captaincy.
Slade told the club's official website: "Nicky is a very good professional and he will remain club captain while Virgs will be the team's matchday captain.
"I felt Adam and Tommy (Elphick) were massively influential in keeping us up. It is that sort of character that we need in the side.
"He is a defender so most of the game is in front of him. He is a good character and he can be a strong character when he needs to be."
Meanwhile, a strong Brighton XI claimed a 2-0 friendly win at Shoreham thanks to goals from George Barker and new signing Jamie Smith.
