The 32-year-old defender was released by Seagulls boss Russell Slade at the the end of last season after 14 years and more than 400 games for the south-coast side. Mayo was offered a one-year deal by former Albion boss Micky Adams, who is now in charge at Port Vale, but a groin injury which would need surgery and a lengthy spell of rehabilitation has forced him to call it a day. "To play for your boyhood team is one thing, but to do it for 14 years is an honour," he said. "Every single day has been a delight - even the times when I haven't been in the side or had been injured."
