Poyet - We were below par

Manager Gus Poyet admitted Brighton were not at their best after the newly-crowned League One champions saw their long unbeaten home record ended by south coast rivals Southampton. Substitute David Connolly and Jose Fonte ended Albion`s 13-month run without defeat at the Withdean, which included a run of 12 successive wins, after Ashley Barnes had given Poyet`s side the lead in first-half stoppage time with his 17th goal of the season. "Our home record has helped us achieve what we have but it's over now," said Poyet. "We didn't play well and didn't pass as well as we can. "It's a fact that we have lost only six games in 43 and we've won the title playing a passing game." Meanwhile, Poyet is backing former Plymouth striker Barnes to prosper in the Championship after seeing his play develop significantly this season. "I see no reason why Ash can't score more and participate more," said Poyet. "He's young, fit and eager to develop his game, and that's what he's been doing this season."
