Slade has brought in 10 new players since Brighton displayed promotion form towards the end of last season to escape relegation, and he has no doubt the necessary improvement will come despite Andrew Whing's own goal inflicting an opening day home loss for the first time in 10 years.
"We need to get better," said Slade, who was encouraged by the second half display.
"We're not the finished article but it is a rebuilding process.
"A lot of people are finding their feet and there were a few communication problems at times."
