Chris Hughton's Brighton recorded their sixth solitary-goal victory of the Sky Bet Championship campaign to move five points clear at the top.

The Seagulls defeated struggling Rotherham 2-1 on the south coast to continue their impressive form in the opening seven games of the season.

Tomer Hemed's 27th-minute goal gave the early pace-setters the advantage and Dale Stephens added a second before Jonson Clarke-Harris pulled one goal back for Steve Evans' side.

Brighton began the night with a four-point advantage and that was increased to five points, with Middlesbrough and Burnley moving up to second and third.

Christian Stuani's brace helped Aitor Karanka's Boro into the top two after they defeated Brentford 3-1. Lasse Vibe had equalised for the Bees but Stuani's second put them ahead with 21 minutes to go and the recalled Albert Adomah then opened his account for the campaign.

Sean Dyche's Clarets made it four wins on the spin thanks to a 2-1 success over MK Dons at Turf Moor which was given to them thanks to goals from Sam Vokes and George Boyd, sandwiched either side of Carl Baker's effort.

Dexter Blackstock's second-half strike ended Birmingham's unbeaten start to the season and earned Nottingham Forest the spoils on the road with a 1-0 triumph.

Cardiff also tasted defeat for the first time in the second tier this season, with Steve Bruce's Hull moving up to fourth with a 2-0 success in south Wales.

Mohamed Diame set the Tigers on their way after just eight minutes and Abel Hernandez wrapped the points up with 10 minutes remaining.

Huddersfield claimed their first triumph of the season and moved out of the bottom following a 2-1 away success at Charlton.

A pair of ex-Manchester City trainees, Harry Bunn and Emyr Huws, put the Terriers two goals ahead inside the opening 34 minutes, the latter finding the net for the first time since April 2014.

Naby Sarr reduced the deficit before the break but Chris Powell's men were able to hang on to lift them out of the bottom three spots.

Ipswich bounced back from successive defeats to return to the play-off spots after a 1-0 victory over Leeds, given to them by Tommy Smith's 32nd-minute header at Elland Road.

Paul Clement enjoyed another win as Derby manager, just three days after he won his first game as a boss.

The Rams were 1-0 victors over 10-man Reading, Tom Ince scoring for the first time in this campaign after Orlando Sa, who bagged a hat-trick in his last game, was dismissed following an off-the-ball clash with Jason Shackell.

Aaron Wilbraham's equaliser with nine minutes to go salvaged a point for Bristol City at Deepdale, where ex-Robins midfielder Neil Kilkenny had scored first for Preston in a 1-1 draw.

Elsewhere, Bolton's home clash with Sheffield Wednesday finished goalless at the Macron Stadium.
