Bolton boss Neil Lennon backs Brighton's bid for promotion

Bolton boss Neil Lennon has backed Brighton's promotion bid ahead of his side's clash with the Sky Bet Championship pace-setters at the Macron Stadium on Saturday.

Bolton's start has been in stark contrast to the Seagulls, with Lennon's men heading into the weekend languishing 21st in the table with just one win from their opening eight games.

And Lennon believes Chris Hughton's side - who sit three points clear at the top after six wins and two draws - could be good enough to go all the way to the Premier League.

Lennon said: "They've had a great start so I don't see why not - they've had the momentum of a great start and that can carry you a long way.

"There's no real superstars but there are some very good players in there. It's a test of our character but it's a good game to get our teeth into."

Third-placed Burnley look to leapfrog into the automatic promotion places as they take on Reading at Turf Moor.

Sean Dyche's men can take advantage of Middlesbrough not playing until Sunday and move into second if they get back to winning ways after last week's draw at Derby.

Clarets winger Michael Kightly said his side are already showing hints of the kind of form that swept them to promotion to the top flight two years ago.

Kightly said: "We've shown signs of what we're about - how we go into games and perform. We're showing that togetherness that we had the year we got promoted. Hopefully we can build on that and keep performing."

Sheffield Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal is expected to make wholesale changes for the trip to Brentford despite his side's heroic midweek Capital One Cup win at Newcastle.

Defender Tom Lees could be the only Owls player to retain his starting place while struggling Brentford could go into the game without as many as 10 first-choice players.

Hull will look to build on their midweek cup win over Swansea by keeping the pressure on the teams above them with a win over Blackburn at the KC Stadium.

And Mick McCarthy's Ipswich look to make it three league games without defeat as they face struggling Bristol City - who have just one win from their first eight games - at Portman Road.

Kirk Broadfoot could make his first appearance of the season for Rotherham after completing his 10-match suspension as they travel to Birmingham.

MK Dons face the difficult task of raising confidence levels after five straight defeats - including Wednesday' 6-0 Capital Cup mauling by Southampton - as they meet resurgent Derby.

Cardiff look to bounce back from two straight defeats when they face Charlton, while Preston seek their first win in five at home to Wolves.
