Brentford manager Andy Scott got the response he demanded from his players after Robbie Simpson's goal saw off Stevenage 1-0 in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.

The Bees slumped to the bottom of League One after Saturday's 3-1 home defeat by Rochdale and Scott was desperate to get back to winning ways.

"I'm delighted the for lads, they've shown plenty of character," he said.

"It was a tough test for us, Stevenage played well and made it tough for us. They're a good side and I'm sure if they play like that they'll do well in League Two this season.

"But it was really important for us that we got a win under our belts and moved on from Saturday. We were disappointed losing to Rochdale, so I wanted a response from the players - and I got it.

"We had to soak up a bit of pressure, but I thought overall we coped well. I'm delighted we're in the second round, it would be nice if he we could have a good run in this competition."
