Downes joins Saints backroom staff
The 48-year-old, who most recently worked alongside Steve Coppell at Reading, joins Dean Wilkins and Stuart Murdoch on the backroom team at St Mary's.
Pardew said: "I'm delighted to have been able to add Wally to my staff at Southampton.
"He will add further experience that will make him an invaluable member of the coaching team and I'm looking forward to working alongside him."
