Brentford fail to sting Pools

Toothless Brentford had to settle for a point in a dire goalless draw against a rugged Hartlepool outfit. Both sides missed a string of chances to bring spark to the game which was dominated by the two defences and the closest either came to a breakthrough was when Pools defender Gary Liddle fired against the inside of the upright only to see his effort cleared to safety. Bees striker Charlie MacDonald went close midway through the first half but was denied by the onrushing keeper Jake Kean. His forward partner Gary Alexander was also denied by the on-loan Blackburn stopper with a bullet header at the far post. After the break Anthony Sweeney saw a 30-yard drive flash just past the angle and the same man had a chance to wrap it up for the visitors with four minutes left but fired straight at keeper Ben Haymer. Substitute Nicky Forster could have clinched the three points for the hosts in the 90th minute, but his volley drifted wide of the far post and deep into injury time Brentford knew it would not be their day when Sam Saunders curled a free-kick by the upright.
