Brett Johnson has turned down the offer of a two-year deal with Torquay United to sign a 12-month contract with Brentford.
The former Northampton Town defender, who has played in most of the Bees' pre-season friendlies, becomes boss Andy Scott's ninth signing of the summer.
Johnson told the Hounslow Chronicle: "I always knew that I wanted to come here. I just went to Torquay to cover my back in case things didn't work out here.
"I'm not bothered that it's only a one-year deal as it keeps me on my toes. Hopefully I can prove myself and get an extension."
