St Johnstone eyeing Betfred Cup last 16 beyond Brechin

Tommy Wright hopes St Johnstone can wrap up their place in the last 16 of the Betfred Cup when they travel to Brechin on Tuesday night.

The Perth outfit produced an impressive display to wrack up their second-straight win of the new-look tournament as they beat Fakirk 3-0 on Saturday.

That puts Saints top of Group B, three points ahead of the Bairns, who have now suffered two losses out of three.

And Wright reckons victory at Glebe Park will book his team a slot in the knock-out rounds.

He told the club's official YouTube page: "We're in a really good position and hopefully one more win should get us top place.

"We will go to Brechin looking to put on another solid performance after beating Falkirk, looking to get the win we need."

Defender Joe Shaughnessy has been satisfied with Saints' start to the new campaign but reckons they will be on top form by the time their opening Ladbrokes Premiership clash with Aberdeen comes around on August 7.

He said: "We seem to be getting better and better with every match, which is good. We should be at our peak fitness by the time we come to our first league game. We should be looking good.

"Brechin will be another tough game on Tuesday though. They will be looking to get a win but we have just got to treat it as any other game and get the result. Hopefully that will see us through.

"I'm not sure how the other results have gone but I think a win would have us looking good."

Skipper Dave McKay (hip), Ally Gilchrist (pelvis) and David Wotherspoon (wrist) remain out of action but midfielder Murray Davidson should feature against Brechin. Keith Watson, meanwhile, is likely to return from his recent niggle to face Stirling on Saturday.

Brechin will be without Paul McLean as the defender is still suffering from a knee injury.
