Brechin off the bottom of Ladbrokes League One with victory over Stranraer

Brechin leapfrogged Stranraer at the foot of Ladbrokes League One after a 2-0 victory at Glebe Park.

Scott Robinson and Mark McGuigan both brought early saves out of Graeme Smith as Stranraer made a bright save.

But it was the hosts who took the lead in the 20th minute when Dene Shields jumped on a loose ball, turned and rifled a shot past David McGurn.

And six minutes later it was 2-0 as poor defending in the Stranraer penalty box allowed Isaac Layne to latch onto the ball and drill past McGurn.

Layne had the perfect opportunity to extend the lead further in first-half stoppage time but saw his penalty turned away by McGurn.

Andrew Jackson tested McGurn early in the second half but the Stranraer goalkeeper was equal to it as Brechin looked to put the game out of reach.

Kyle Turner then saw his right-footed effort come back of Smith's post as Stranraer looked to get back into the game, but they could not find a way through.
