Scottish League One leaders Ayr had to settle for a point in a 1-1 draw against bottom club Brechin.

The sides exchanged early shots, with Jordan Preston firing wide for Ayr and Isaac Layne spurning an opening for Brechin.

Goalkeeper Graeme Smith comfortably gathered a weak header from Alan Trouten, while Darren McCormack should have done better with an effort from the edge of the area.

The opening goal came two minutes before the break when Jamie Adams collected a pass from Robbie Crawford and lobbed the ball over the keeper.

It was all square early in the second half when Willie Dyer's floated corner found Layne and he slammed the ball home.

The visitors came agonisingly close to regaining the lead in the 68th minute when a Ross Docherty strike rattled the crossbar, while Paul McLean's header was kept out by Greg Fleming at the other end.

Layne almost snatched victory for Brechin late on but Fleming made another fine stop.
