The Mineirao or 'Estadio Governador Magalhaes Pinto' was originally built to give the city of Belo Horizonte a larger alternative to the Estadio Independencia, which was the city's main stadium in the 1960's.
The Mineirao took around five years to construct and opened in 1965 with a match between a selection from the state of Minas Gerais and Argentina’s River Plate.
Much like the Maracana, the Mineirao required a completely redeveloped bottom tier and roof to meet FIFA standards for the 2014 World Cup.
The Mineirao is set to play a total of six matches during Brazil's 2014 World Cup, including one round of 16 match and one semi-final.
Facts: Opened in 1965, the Mineirao is home to Cruzeiro EC.
