The Maracana or 'Estadio Mario Filho' was built as the flagship stadium for Brazil's 1950 World Cup where it was supposed to become the biggest venue for football in the world.
The attendance of the 1950 games final was around 173,000 but it is thought that around 200,000 spectators watched the match live from the stands.
Work to redevelop the Maracana began in 2010, three years after Brazil were awarded the 2014 World Cup. The bottom tier was completely rebuilt and a new roof was installed. The redeveloped Maracana now has a total capacity of 79,000. The venue was reopened on June 2nd 2013 when Brazil took on England in an international friendly.
The Maracana is set to host seven matches during 2014's World Cup, including one quarter-final as well as the final itself.
Facts: Opened in 1950, the Maracana is home to CR Flamengo and Fluminense FC.
