The Estadio Beira-Rio was opened in 1969 with a friendly between Internacional and Benfica. Initial construction of the venue began over a decade earlier after Internacional enjoyed a period of success and the stadium became too small.
Extensive redevelopment of the stadium began once the venue was selected to host a number of World Cup 2014 games. The lower tier of the stadium was demolished and rebuilt and a new roof and exterior were also added. Although these renovations were plagued by financial issuses.
The Estadio Beira-Rio is to host four group stage matches and one round of 16 match in the 2014 World Cup.
