You’ve have to hand it to the Brazilian footballers. Even with the injuries the team has suffered their outlook is still focused. Their main star Neymar said Friday he would be well enough to play in the World Cup in June despite suffering a foot injury that will most likely force him to miss the rest of the Spanish domestic season. It was during the match against Real Madrid when the 22-year-old Barcelona superstar injured his left foot. To add insult to injury Barcelona lost 2-1 in Spain's Copa Del Rey final.
The initial reports out of Barcelona said Thursday he would be on the sideline for four weeks and could miss the rest of the clubs season. This comes as a blow to the team. With less than two months to go, Neymar however promised to be healthy on time to play in the World Cup. Not one to play into the news gauntlet, there is a certain amount of press speculation surrounding his decision. Not to mention a possible title match on the line against rival Atletico Madrid for the final game of the season.
"I always had a bit of fear that the injury would force me to stay out ... of the World Cup," Neymar told Globo TV. "But within the next three weeks I'll be back and I hope to play Barcelona's last game."
Neymar is the most promising player and the greatest reality in Brazilian sports. He not only represents the biggest hope of the competition for Brazilian fans, we also have the rare chance to witness, first hand, the emergence of a sports legend. Although he is merely 22, Neymar is carrying the expectations of an entire nation on his shoulders, with many experts tipping him to lead Brazil to success at this year’s World Cup on home soil. It would come as a great emotional and psychological blow should the forward not be able to play.
Brazil coach Felipe Scolari plans for Neymar to lead his country's hopes for a sixth World Cup title on home soil in June. In the meantime Neymar will stay in shape by exercising with weights and in the pool, the medical department of Brazil's national team said after talking with Barcelona.
"It's horrible to be out, without training, without playing, and to see your comrades playing and training," he told Globo TV.
Neymar will be the second-youngest player to wear the number ten shirt for the Selecao at a World Cup.
We all remember how Pele famously made the shirt his own as a 17-year-old at the 1958 finals and again in 1962 before another crown in 1970.
In an interview, Neymar stated, “No match will be easy” in the World Cup as Brazil, who lost the final to Uruguay when they last staged the tournament at home back in 1950, take on the Croatians, Mexico and Cameroon in their pool.
