Arena das Dunas - World Cup 2014

The Arena das Dunas was built to replace the old Machadao Stadium after Natal was selected as a host city for the World Cup.

The stadium officially opened in 2014 on January 26th with friendly matches involving local sides America Futebol Clube and ABC.

Architecture firm Populous were inspired by Natal's famous sand dunes and this is heavily reflected in the design of the stadium.

The stadium is scheduled to hold four group matches during the tournament and will become the home of local side America de Natal after the World Cup, where capacity of the ground will be reduced by 10,000 to eventually seat around 33,000 spectators.

Facts: Opens in 2014, the Arena das Dunas is home to America Futebol Clube.
