Bradford City have confirmed that veteran defender David Wetherall will call time on his playing career at the end of the current campaign.

The 36-year-old has been with the Bantams since the summer of 1999, racking up more than 300 appearances for the Valley Parade, having previously spent eight years with Leeds United.

Wetherall believes the time is now right to move on, although he will stay with City as part of Stuart McCall's backroom staff.

He told the Telegraph & Argus: "When you get to my age you take it year by year.

"This year I didn't expect to be the same player I was in my mid-20s, but I was just beginning to feel frustrated with the things I can't do any more.

"I just believe that next year is definitely the right time for a younger man to have the shirt. I could go on and expect to be a bit-part player, but I don't really want to do that.

"I'm not one of those people who can kid themselves they can go on forever, you can't.

"Now I'm looking forward to a new challenge. I would like to stay in football and this is a great opportunity."
