McCall: Joe needed fresh challenge
The 22-year-old winger, who rejected a three-year contract offer from the Bantams in the summer, was also linked with a move to Shrewsbury.
McCall told the Telegraph & Argus: "Once Joe didn't sign his contract it was always a probability he would go if anyone came in.
"But with bringing in Scott (Neilson) as well, I think it was the time for Joe to have a fresh challenge. I think it was the right thing for all parties and sometimes players can be somewhere too long.
"It wouldn't surprise me if he goes on and does well for Oldham."
