Bournemouth chairman Peter Phillips has admitted that the club were forced to sell skipper Carl Fletcher to stay afloat.
Fletcher left for West ham at the end of August for £275,000 and Phillips told the Daily Echo that the deal had to be done.
He said: "Although we didn't want to sell our captain and best player, that income of more than £250,000 came at a vital time for us.
"We were under threat of being wound up and that money ensured that we stayed alive for at least another couple of months.
"The financial situation remains very serious but it would have been an awful lot worse had it not been for that deal."
