Afobe will give us firepower to beat drop, says Bournemouth boss Howe

Boss Eddie Howe insists Bournemouth need extra firepower to beat the drop as they close in on Benik Afobe.

The striker is expected to complete a club-record move from Wolves on Monday and could make his debut in Tuesday's game with West Ham.

The Cherries are 16th in the Barclays Premier League, four points above the relegation zone, and also host relegation rivals Norwich on Saturday.

With Callum Wilson out for the season with a knee injury and Josh King continuing to struggle with hamstring issues, Howe moved for Afobe to beef up his forward line.

"I felt we needed a striker," he said after Saturday's 2-1 FA Cup win at Birmingham.

"Callum we lost and that was a huge blow to us and we have lost Josh King with hamstring problems. It has left us very light and we need firepower. We need players who can come in and do the job.

"The players we have here proved they can do a job. (Glenn) Murray came off the bench and scored and it was good to see Lee Tomlin score. But we are light on the ground and hopefully he (Afobe) will add competition for places and real quality in the position."

Murray scored an 85th-minute winner - and fourth goal of the season - at Birmingham after Tomlin's penalty cancelled out Michael Morrison's opener.

James Vaughan missed a second-half spot kick for Birmingham as Bournemouth, who made 11 changes, rode their luck and Blues goalkeeper Adam Legzdins felt the hosts should have won.

"There's massive disappointment, we missed a chance to beat a Premier League team." he told the club's official website.

"On reflection, when we sit down and watch the game, I think we deserved to win it and we definitely created the better chances.

"We're absolutely gutted to lose. It felt a good game to be part of. It was competitive and we gave ourselves more than a good account, that's why we're feeling so down."
