Hitzfeld aims for title finale
Tuesday Apr 08 2008 13:01

Coach Ottmar Hitzfeld claims that leading Bayern Munich to the Bundesliga title in his final season would be one of the greatest achievements of his career.

The 59-year-old has guided Bayern to a nine-point lead at the top of the table and the league title looks to be heading back to Bavaria after a one-year absence.

Hitzfeld will step down at the end of the season to take over the Switzerland national team, but claims his reinvigoration of the club is one of the proudest chapters in a glittering career.

"When you've decided to stop after so many years in the Bundesliga this title would be a massive going away present," he admitted.

"I would be hugely proud, especially after all the investment and the weight of expectation around the place.

"Building up a team with ten new players and bringing home the title in the first year would make me proud, as would the fact that I would have brought Bayern back onto the trophy trail and returned them to the Champions League."
