Midfield star Mario Goetze started for Borussia Dortmund in Wednesday's Champions League semi-final, first-leg at home to Real Madrid, just a day after it was revealed he had agreed to join Bayern Munich.

The 20-year-old has enforced a release clause in his contract allowing him to leave for a reported 37 million euros (US$48.17m) and there had been speculation he would be left out of the semi-final at Signal Iduna Park.

Felipe Santana, who scored the winning goal in Dortmund's dramatic 3-2 quarter-final win over Malaga, had to make do with a place on the bench as Mats Hummels returned at centre-back.

Defensive midfielder Sven Bender came in for Sebastian Kehl, who has a foot injury, with goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller taking over the captaincy.

Argentina's Gonzalo Higuain started as Real's lone striker with Karim Benzema on the bench, while Luka Modric starts as the central midfielder, flanked by Mesut Ozil and Cristiano Ronaldo.
