Defending Bundesliga champions Borussia Dortmund are waiting on the fitness of Germany pair defender Mats Hummels and midfielder Ilkay Gundogan ahead of Sunday's league game at Hanover 96.

Hummels is nursing a hip injury from Wednesday's 1-1 draw at Manchester City in the Champions League, while Gundogan took a knock to the back.

"It's not broken or torn, maybe it's just a pinched nerve," said Hummels about his hip injury.

"At the moment, I couldn't even play (the stationary sport of) boccia."

Dortmund are third in the Bundesliga table, seven points adrift of league leaders Bayern Munich who host Hoffenheim on Saturday.

Both Hummels and Gundagon are expected to be named in the Germany squad on Friday for World Cup qualifers against Ireland in Dublin on October 12 and Sweden in Berlin four days later.
