Dortmund general manager Hans-Joachim Watzke against title-deciding play-off

Borussia Dortmund's general manager Hans-Joachim Watzke says he strongly opposes a play-off to determine the Bundesliga champions each season.

Former Eintracht Frankfurt chairman Heribert Bruchhagen suggested play-offs, like in many US sports, could be a way to end Bayern's dominance of the league.

Rather than the league being won by the side who finishes the regular season first, the top four teams would be involved in an end-of-season mini-league to determine the overall champion.

"If all the 34 games of the season did was determine qualification for the play-offs, then we would be leading our fans a merry dance," Watzke told Kicker magazine.

"The fairest, cleanest and most difficult way to win the title is through the German league.

"I am strictly opposed to taking value away from it."

Dortmund cannot see his side wrestling the title back from Bayern this season, though.

"We should not weigh our young players down with too high expectations," Watzke said.

"They are not going to hit their peak this season.

"Bayern are one of the three best teams in the world and for as long as Bayern spend twice as much money on their team as we do, the probability is always going to be higher that they will pick up far more points."

Dortmund trail league-leading Bayern by four points after seven games of the season.
