Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Lars Bender has signed a contract extension which will keep him with the German league club until June 2017, it was announced on Wednesday.

The 22-year-old, who made the last of his four appearances for Germany in the defeat to France at the end of February, joined Leverkusen in 2009 from second division Munich 1860.

"I am happy and satisfied here," said Bender.

"Bayer Leverkusen is the right club for my sporting development."

Bender's twin brother Lars plays for German champions Borussia Dortmund and has also broken into the national side.

"Lars is a very important element for our successful future at Bayer Leverkusen," said the club's sports director Rudi Voeller.
