Bolton Wanderers have agreed a one-year deal for Nantes' Sweden midfielder Christian Wilhelmsson, who will officially put pen to paper in the next 24 hours.
The 27-year-old wideman had also been linked with Manchester City, having impressed last season while on loan with AS AS Roma.
Trotters boss Sammy Lee told the club's official website: "We've been working on this deal for some time and our patience has paid off.
"He is a versatile winger and will add a new dimension to the new style of play we are going to implement this season.
"One of his greatest attributes is that he is capable of playing on both the left and right flank with relative ease. He likes to attack and will give us the perfect outlet to provide good service to our forwards.
"His attacking prowess comes from his blistering pace and is regarded by many as one of the quickest players in the Swedish national team. He has the potential to light up the Premier League with his pace and skill."
Wilhelmsson only joined Nantes a year ago from Belgian side Anderlecht, but was loaned out to AS Roma in January as his parent club slipped to relegation from Ligue 1.
