Bolton Wanderers boss Gary Megson has backed referee Rob Styles to continue in the Premier League, despite his major mistake in the Trotters' 2-0 loss at Manchester United.

Styles awarded the Red Devils a penalty for an alleged foul by Jlloyd Samuel on Cristiano Ronaldo with the game at Old Trafford goalless, but the match official has since apologised for the decision.

Megson thinks that that should be the end of the saga and is happy to move on.

He told the club's official website: "We spoke on Monday, but I'm not going to go into detail because it's private.

"We had a conversation for about 25 minutes, but one thing I can say is that we agreed that the behaviour of the players was terrific after a huge error.

"It's gone now and we can't do anything about it. It was an error and everybody knew it was an error, but these things do have a tendency to even themselves out.

"I think he's a good referee and he made a mistake and everybody does that. He'd be welcome here or indeed if we got him away from home again.

"I don't think any of the Premier League referees should be demoted for making mistakes.

"I don't see what it would do at all and we have to be a bit more forward looking than that."
