Speed set for landmark

Bolton Wanderers' veteran midfielder Gary Speed has been labelled one of the PFA's 'finest members' as he prepares to make his 500th Premiership appearance at the weekend.

The 37-year-old will reach the landmark on Saturday as the Trotters take on West Ham at the Reebok Stadium.

Speed made his Premiership debut in 1992 for Leeds United and his longevity has been praised by Professional Footballers' Association chief Gordon Taylor.

"It is a great tribute to his fitness and his skill that Gary is set to reach the 500 landmark," said Taylor.

"You look at the job he has done for various clubs, and his country, and you have to admire him. He is one of our finest members.

"It is an exemplary record and deserves the warmest congratulations from everyone at the PFA and everyone in football."
