Sam's exit shocks Nolan

30 Apr 2007 - 08:04:31

Bolton Wanderers captain Kevin Nolan is shocked by the news that Sam Allardyce has left the Reebok Stadium after spending over seven years in charge of the club.

However, Nolan believes the club can go on to greater things thanks to the foundations that have been laid by Allardyce.

"I'm devastated and completely shocked by the news," Nolan told the club's official website. "Although I saw articles in the papers on Saturday, I hoped it was all just paper talk.

"I've got nothing but praise and respect for Sam. He's made me the player I am today. He built this club up to the stature it is today and he has created great foundations for the club.

"He was the first manager to take us to the UEFA Cup and we now owe it to him to see out the rest of the season and make sure we get back into Europe. There are very two important games and we will do our utmost to qualify for him.

"As disappointing as the news is, there are only fantastic times ahead for this football club. We've got a terrific and talented squad who want to achieve things."

Allardyce, who was appointed manager in October 1999, leaves with immediate effect and is already being linked with Manchester City and Newcastle United.

He took over at Bolton when the club was in the second tier of English football, and guided them to promotion to the Premiership, via the play-offs, six years ago.

After two seasons of relegation struggle, the Trotters have been regulars in the Premiership's top-ten in the last four campaigns, and they played in last term's UEFA Cup.

Saturday's 2-2 draw at Chelsea left Bolton fifth in the table and on course to play in Europe again next term.
